“Being on the road requires something magical, unexpected and rhythmical” – says the Estonian artist Mari Kalkun. Together with three other musicians she will take the listeners on a journey inspired by the traditional sounds of southern Estonia.
Traditional lullabies will constitute an answer to these worrying times, together with contemporary poems composed from dying local languages. This is what Mari Kalkun and Runorun's repertoire looks like. The ensemble was established in Helsinki in 2012. The artists have performed at international festivals and competitions not only at home in Estonia, but also in Finland and Hungary. In April 2015, the ensemble recorded the album “Tii Ilo”, which has brought them recognition among listeners and critics. The record was released in Germany and Japan as well.
Improvisation is a vital part present during the process of writing the pieces by Mari Kalkun and Runorun. Not only does this unique quartet combine two warm female voices, but also two instrumentalists playing a double bass and percussion. It is also their vast knowledge of tradition, creative musical exploration, unlimited fantasy and beautiful sounds. All this awaits the listeners who wish to discover another concert within the Rubato series devoted to the roots of music.
