"A guitar is an unusual instrument that only a few can understand". When Franz Schubert uttered these words, he probably did not suppose that in the 21st century the guitar would become the most popular instrument, competing against the piano and violin for the first place on the podium. Or maybe this great romantic composer had the amazing soul of the instrument in mind, which only the greatest masters can use to show their musical craftsmanship?
Some musicologists claim that the history of the guitar is, in fact, the history of mankind. However, we would give primacy in this respect to percussion instruments (and not just because we want to please our orchestra colleagues). It should be noted, however, that the instrument considered the precursor of the guitar was already known in ancient Mesopotamia that is about four thousand years BC. As for our era, we suggest remembering three events related to it: the construction of the first six-stringed guitar by Gaetano Vinaccia, the development of the acoustic guitar model by Antonio Torres Jurado and, of course, the birth of an electric guitar thanks to Adolph Rickenbacker.
And the contemporary guitar history is created by the first edition of Baltic Guitar Days in Szczecin. This event is devoted to the art of playing the instrument with numerous lectures, workshops and concerts, but also a competition in which one of the prizes for the Grand Prix winner is a concert at the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin, to which we cordially invite you.
