Before reading further, we recommend turning on the Boiler Room in the background with our new guests, Mouse On Mars:
As reported by the muno.pl portal, dedicated to club music:
Mouse On Mars is a German duo incorporating various inspirations into their work. There is ambient, techno, dub, rock, jazz and jungle.
The group was founded in 1993 by Jan St. Werner from Cologne and Andi Thoma from Düsseldorf. They came together owing to their fascination with the pioneers of German electronics – Neu, Can and Kraftwerk, and their interest in expressive forms of new electronic music. Their first recordings for the London label Too Pure (Stereolab and PJ Harvey) proved to be their ticket into the European electronic league. The debut single "Frosch" even reached a top three in the independent chart in the UK!
In 1995, the re-release of their debut album "Vulvaland", as well as their next record – "Iaora Tahiti", were also released in the American market by the American Recording label of famous producer Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, Slayer, Beastie Boys). Their position overseas as well as in Europe became solid. MOM toured alongside Jimi Tenor, Gus Gus, Tortoise and Stereolab to name a few.The group also gained cult status in their hometown Cologne, where they were considered the main representative in the experimental trend in electronics as well as the status of creators centered around the label a-Musik. The innovation of Mouse On Mars in the field of avant-garde music also brought side projects to the musicians – Microstoria (together with Markus Popp from Oval) and Lithops. The band has also collaborated with Niobe, members of Stereolab and Matthew Herbert
Their compositions have also appeared on many compilations – including the "Trance Europe Express" series, "Macro Dub Infection 2" and "Folds and Rhizomes", along with "In Memoriam" dedicated to philosopher Gilles Deleuze. Mouse On Mars maintain a cooperation with the radio station WDR (West German Broadcasting) as well as the Arte television channel.
In 1999, state German Radio granted them a special prize for innovation in contemporary music. From this year, Jan and Andi have also run a series of lectures devoted to experimental music for students of the Design and Visual Communication Department of the Polytechnic in Aachen. In the past few years we have witnessed the release of the great album "Varcharz" (released by Mike Patton’s Ipecac) and another excellent record released by the London Domino (Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys) and recorded as Von Suddenfeld with Mark E Smith – the leader of the legendary group, The Fall.
