Camerata Israel is currently the leading chamber orchestra in Israel. The ensemble was founded in 1983 by Avner Biron, who has been the music director and permanent conductor of the orchestra since its inception. Camerata gives over one hundred concerts annually in Israel and abroad. Its activities include regular subscription cycles, festivals, occasional concerts and unique educational projects throughout the country.
Camerata's repertoire ranges from Baroque works to contemporary music. In addition to presenting a traditional set of pieces, the orchestra performs unknown or recently discovered music from various eras and prepares world premieres of contemporary works, music by Israeli composers and compositions written especially for Avner Biron and Camerata. The orchestra also went on numerous concert tours around the world. It has successfully performed in Europe, the United States and the Far East in the most important concert halls, including Amsterdam, Berlin, Leipzig, Munich, Bonn, Paris, New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Chicago, Beijing and Shanghai. Both music critics and the audience applaud the group's performances and recordings under the baton of Avner Biron.
The Arthur Rubinstein International Master Piano Competition was established in 1973 on the initiative of Jan Jacob Bistritzky, a close friend of Arthur Rubinstein, who honoured the competition by agreeing to give it his name.
The competition, conceived in the spirit of the remarkable achievements of this legendary pianist, aims to set the highest musical standards and is an important international forum for the presentation of talented, aspiring young pianists and the development of their artistic careers. It was first inaugurated in 1974 and is held every three years.
As a juror himself, Rubinstein took part in the first two editions of the competition, during which the winners were Emanuel Ax and Gerhard Oppitz, now recognized pianists.
From July 2020, the Competition's artistic director is pianist Ariel Cohen.
During the last 40 years of its history, international recognition has been won by such contestants as Gerhard Oppitz, Angela Cheng, Alexander Korsantia, Kirill Gerstein, Alexander Gavrylyuk, Igor Levit, Khatia Buniatishvili, Boris Giltburg, Daniil Trifonov, Szymon Nehring and others.
