Another Sunday at the Philharmonic in Szczecin is a proposal made especially for the Women’s Day. Our Clef Lounge awaits the youngest music lovers during the concert. After the concert, you can still visit the gallery on the fourth floor and have lunch in our Symfonia Cafe. The Philharmonic Gift Shop has a wide range of gifts, in particular, we are proud of our record releases covering a series of all works by Mieczysław Karłowicz.
Meanwhile, we return to the history of chamber music and look into the "fraucimer". Shaped by today's perception of women and men, we do not attach importance to the gender difference. However, one hundred and fifty years ago, there was an informal division into male and female instruments, also transferred to musical forms. The quartet was the domain of men, while the female form of music was the trio. In this context, the words become clear: "once friendships were formed at the chalice, but soon the sense of bond born of the play in the quartet will replace the community formed at the counter." Fortunately, the ladies didn't sit in pubs, so they could use a home piano to make music together.
Clara Schumann was Robert's wife. Fanny Mendelssohn was Felix's sister. Both strong and full of character, and above all taking an active part in the then, male-dominated musical life (we recommend Fanny's remarks on Paganini. She wrote that during a performance he looked like a crazy killer and gestures like a monkey). Besides, they were the souls of the party, as well as persons valued by friends and listeners.
Happy Women's Day!
