A Filetta – a male singing group dealing with the tradition of Corsican polyphonic singing – is the most important and the most recognizable musical formation of that island. It was founded in 1978 by Michele Frassati and Jean-Claude Acquaviva, mainly to sustain the unusually old, unique Corsican tradition of polyphonic singing. Among other things, thanks to their activity, this music not only survived the crisis, but has now gained a new momentum manifested by both the increase in the number of Corsican traditional singing bands, as well as the richness of new compositional forms created with the preservation of tradition.
The ensemble constantly cooperates with theater, dance theater, opera and, above all, with the creators of film music. Cooperation with the French composer Bruno Coulais is particularly fruitful. The group interpreted ten soundtracks of his authorship, including the one for the film "Himalaya", which was awarded in the 2000 with a Cesar and a Golden CD. Other honours of the ensemble include: Golden Diapason in 1993, Choc du Monde de la Musique in 1993 and 1995, and Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros in 1995 and 2008. The group has recorded over twenty albums.
