You have certainly noticed the French repertoire of the Sunday concert. Particular attention is recommended to the intriguing musical work of Darius Milhaud ‘King Rene's fireplace’. And that's reason enough to start from this position.
Rene of Anjou went down in history not only as the prince of Piedmont, Lorraine and Provence, King of Naples, Aragon, Sicily, Majorca and Corsica, and the titular ruler of Jerusalem. He was also a talented writer, draftsman, painter, and some also attribute some musical abilities to him. It all made him one of the most influential people of his time!
One of King Rene's castles was in Aix-en-Provence – a city where Darius Milhaud's family came from. The composer was extremely inspired by the character of the Good King. The suite you will hear during the concert consists of miniatures stylized for old songs – this is how Milhaud imagined the sounds of a medieval court. Where does the title come from? According to legend, Rene was such a great king that his fireplace, providing heat to the household and subjects, was ... the sun itself! A joyful suite is, therefore, a symbol of happiness and prosperity.
And so we devoted the whole story to the Good King Rene, but that does not mean that we underestimate the works of other French composers or the suite "Scaramouche"! Quite the opposite – we invite you to the concert!
