Tabea Zimmermann began learning to play the viola at the age of three. She studied at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg and Mozarteum in Salzburg. Owing to her victory at the Maurice Vieux competition in Paris in 1983, she received a viola made by Etienne Vatelota, which she has been playing ever since.
Zimmermann has inspired many composers to write pieces for viola and introduced many new compositions to the regular concert and chamber repertoire. In April 1994, there was a world premiere of Sonata for Viola Solo by György Ligeti held, a piece composed especially for her.
Numerous recordings for various labels including EMI, Teldec and Deutsche Grammophon document her artistic output. The Ars Musici label released a live album where Zimmermann plays an instrument belonging to Beethoven at the Beethovenhaus in Bonn with the accompaniment of Hartmut Höll.
Tabea Zimmermann has received various awards for her outstanding artistic accomplishments including Hessischer Kulturpreis, Frankfurter Musikpreis and the International Award of Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena.
Tickets for the concert “Tabea Zimmermann plays Bartók” are available for 50-20 PLN online and at the ticket office of the Philharmonic.
