Due to reasons beyond the control of the Philharmonic, the jazz concert – Espressivo Carlos Averhoff jr Quintet planned for the 6th February will be replaced with a performance by an international quintet of a legendary American saxophonist and composer GREG OSBY, which has been exclusively commissioned by the Szczecin Philharmonic.
Greg Osby is one of the pillars of American jazz. Mostly, he specialises in free jazz and free funk. Not only is he a fantastic saxophonist and composer, but also an educator valued for his thoughtful and innovative approach to jazz composition and concerts as well. He has been a teacher at the Berklee College of Music and now takes an active part in jazz workshops all around the world. He constitutes an example for the contemporary generation of jazzmen and women.
Greg Osby's biography overlaps in a great part with the history of jazz music. Since 1980s he has been performing and recording with such stars as Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Jack DeJohnette, Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, The Grateful Dead, Woody Shaw and Jim Hall. So far he has recorded fifteen albums with the legendary Blue Note Records. In 2008 Greg set up his own recording label “Inner Circle Music”, which supports the most gifted artists from all around the world.
Many Szczecin music lovers are pleased to know that Greg Osby invited to his project one of the most talented Polish pianists of the young generation, Kuba Płużek, whose sound is compared to Jason Moran's – an American jazz star. Josh Ginsburg, an American will play on the double-bass. Ginsburg has cooperated with Logan Richardson, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner and Ambrose Akinmusire. And last but not least, Dawid Fortuna, who is one of the most gifted and active Polish drummers, will be responsible for the rhythm. During the concert, we will hear original compositions by Greg Osby.
