Dariusz Mizera - double bass
Dariusz Mizera was born on 29 December 1967 in Bytom. His musical education began at the School of
Music in Bytom, under the guidance of the well-known educator and double bassist, Professor Gerard
Przybyła (the principal bassist with the Grand Orchestra of the Polish Radio and Television in Katowice).
He developed his double bass playing skills at the Musical Academy in Warsaw, in the class of Professor
Tadeusz Pelczar. At the age of 21 he was offered the position of deputy principal bass with the Polish Radio
Orchestra in Warsaw.

After graduating, he did not stop striving to improve of his technique of playing the instrument. The training with
masters of the double bass, such as Evgeniy Kolossov/Russia, Francois Rabbath/France and Franco
Petracchi/Italy, opened up new possibilities for him and provided new musical experiences.
In 1990 Dariusz Mizera was offered the position of principal bass with the Warsaw Chamber Opera, with which
he performed all over Europe playing pieces by Mozart, Rossini and various Polish composers. He performed as a
soloist on tour with the Radio Orchestra of the Polish Radio and Television in Warsaw, “Concerto Avenna”,
Jeunesses Musicales, Concerto Cremona, the Radio Orchestra in Copenhagen, Winterthurer Symphoniker.

In 1995 he accepted the position of principal bass with the Malmo Symphony Orchestra in Sweden, and in July of
that year, he was offered the position of double bass section leader with the Danish Concert Orchestra. The
eight-year stay in Denmark was a very intense period in the artist’s life. He performed in solo concerts with the
orchestra, recitals and recordings for Danish radio. It was also there that he released his first solo record with
works by Bottesini, and a multimedia CD for Universal with W. A. Mozart's well-known opera “Don Giovanni”
adapted for an instrumental trio and voice.
Major prizes won in international competitions include: Second prize in the international Giovanni Bottesini
Competition in Italy, and first prize won in 2002 in Bucharest in the Joseph Prunner Memorial Double Bass
Competition.
Dariusz Mizera also took part and won prizes in Polish competitions, such as the Audition for Young Double
Bassists in Elbląg (third place), the Chamber Music Competition in Wrocław (first place), the Adam Bronisław
Ciechański Competition (first place), the Yamaha Foundation of Europe (first place). In 2013 he won the
ECHO Klassik prize for the Richard Strauss’ “Metamorphosen” septet.

Since 2002 Dariusz Mizera has been the principal bass at the Zurich Opera, and in the years 2005 to 2010 he
was the professor at the Higher School of Music in Neuchatel, Switzerland.

He has taken part in numerous international festivals, such as: the Festival Aix-en-Provence, the Schleswig-
Holstein Musik Festival, the Lindenbaum Music Festival in Seoul/South Korea, the Salzburg Festspiele, and the

Menuhin Festival in Gstaad. The artist has worked with many outstanding conductors, such as: Witold
Lutoslawski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Daniel Harding, Claudio Abbado, Daniele Gatti, Zubin Mehta, Charles Dutoit,
Bernard Haitink, Adam Fischer, Franz Welser-Möst, Paavo Järvi, Neeme Järvi, Fabio Luisi and Valery Gergiev.

He regularly performs and collaborates with the Zürcher Kammerorchester, Solisten Zug, Concerto Avenna, the
Neuchatel Orchester, the Kammer Ensamble Chaemeleon, the Arauer Symphony Orchester, the Stradivarius
Quartet, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Danish Concert Orchester, the Orchestre de Philharmonique, Monte
Carlo, the Gringolts Quartet, the Sankt Gallen Orchester, the Orchestra La Scintilla, the Menuhin Festival
Orchestra and the Radio Symphony Orchestra Copenhagen.
Dariusz Mizera specializes in early music and works with masters such as Christopher Hogwood, Nicolaus
Harnoncourt, Trevor Pinnock, Cecilia Bartoli, Riccardo Minasi and Giovanni Antonini.

He conducts music courses and masterclass courses in Croatia, Serbia,
Switzerland, Korea and Poland.
