The 70th anniversary of the Orchestra is a unique opportunity to celebrate. The more so, because especially for this occasion a musical gift for the Philharmonic musicians and music lovers is being prepared by one of the most colorful figures in the history of twentieth century music – Quincy Jones! The world premiere of the piece composed by Mr Jones for the Philharmonic in Szczecin on October 19th for the birthday concert. Meanwhile, in anticipation for this "musical card birthday", it is worth becoming familiarized with his life and work by watching the movie "Quincy", which will be premiered on Netflix on September 21.

The largest instrument in the world – a symphony orchestra, co-created by people, is the most difficult instrument to build and maintain in a good condition. And yet, thanks to commitment and passion, despite unfavorable conditions, it can be created and last years, even as much as seventy years. That is exactly how old the Szczecin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra is.
For the Orchestra, these seventy years have been a time of continuous development, cooperation with excellent conductors and soloists, creating unusual and often surprising projects. On the occasion of this birthday, the Orchestra will showcase their performative skills at their best in a concert on October 19th, 2018. The program includes the symphonic poem "Eternal Songs" Op. 10 by Mieczysław Karłowicz and "The Rite of Spring" by Igor Stravinsky. The icing on the cake will be the world premiere of a song written especially for the 70th anniversary of the Orchestra by Quincy Jones!
The 27-time Grammy Award winner has this time composed a piece dedicated to the Szczecin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. This composition by one of the best specialists will bring together the two worlds of classical and avant-garde music.
Quincy Jones began his career while a teenager as an excellent trumpeter. Today, at the age of 85, he is a recognized and respected composer, arranger, producer and legend of the music industry. In the 1950s, as a member of jazz orchestras, the artist made numerous tours around Europe, and in 1957-1958 he attended classes in classical composition from Nadia Boulanger and Oliver Messiaen. In the 1960s, as an arranger, he collaborated with many jazz and entertainment stars, including Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee. Since 1964, he has also created film music for example to Sidney Lumet's film "The Pawnbroker", he has been involved in music production since the 1970s, he has collaborated with Michael Jackson, and he is also passionate about Brazilian culture, which is manifested in his 1962 famous album"Big Band Bossa Nova." We can therefore expect the unexpected from his new composition.
"Quincy", a new documentary about the life and work of Quincy Jones, will surely allow us to get to know this extraordinary figure. Jones' daughter Rashida together with Alan Hicks undertook the task to direct the picture. She is also the originator and author of the script and Alan Hicks is the co-writer of the screenplay. So you can safely say that the story of the music legend will be told by the most appropriate person. “Quincy” will have its worldwide release on Netflix on September 21 – before the musical emotions that we will be provide during the concert in October.
