If you perform folk music, come to Szczecin and take part in the “True Musicians Tournament”! We invite all traditional musicians as well as performers interpreting traditional repertoire, both professionals and amateurs, to submit their applications. This year, for the first time, dancers may compete as well! We are waiting for your applications until July the 21st.
The Third True Musicians Tournament will begin on 31st August and will last until 3rd of September. The venue for competing performances is the center belonging to one of the most important music establishments in the West Pomeranian Region, and at the same time a unique icon of contemporary architecture. The exceptional space of the Szczecin Philharmonic for true musicians will become filled with the richness of our non material heritage and will allow us to stay in touch with our traditional music culture. This meeting of musicians from the whole of Poland results in new musical projects – it was here where the Male Singing Group “Ryki” was established.
The True Musicians Tournament stands for a confrontation as well as a meeting of folk music artists drawing inspiration from various sources: from reconstruction, through folk, jazz to experimental music. The previous editions gathered on the Philharmonic stages over 300 performers and 4000 audience members. The artists represented almost all the regions of Poland. Integration takes place during numerous accompanying events – film screenings, workshops and the loved-by-all dancing party – House of Dance!
The form of the Tournament is open and does not assume a rigid criteria to divide the participants into traditional musicians and professional musicians. We refer the truth of performative expression and the truth of source material. “True Musicians” present their interpretations in a spontaneous way, by presenting their individual version of a musical piece. What the Tournament participants have in common is the enormous and contagious joy of making music – says Dorota Serwa, Managing Director of the Szczecin Philharmonic.
The Tournament is divided into four music categories. In each category awards will be granted with a pool exceeding 25,000 PLN.
The music categories in which one can take part in the Tournament are as follows:
• solo instrumentalists;
• solo vocalists;
• instrumental ensembles and vocal-instrumental ensembles (up to 6 members);
• singing ensembles (up to 6 members).
For the first time this year dance couples can participate in the Tournament accompanied by their own band (a full makeup of 6 persons). The Dance Tournament will take place in the lobby of the Philharmonic on 2nd September.
