Tangerine Dream – the legendary band will perform on 9th June at the Philharmonic, marking the final in the SoundLab series. Even though Edgar Froese, the founder and leader of this German electronic music band, “changed his cosmic address in January 2015”, the first mini-album recorded since his death by the remaining band members, “Quantum Key”, has entranced fans. The concert will top out this year's series of the Philharmonic Laboratory of Electronic Music.

Tangerine Dream was founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese. Over its years of activity, the band changed its members many a time. The only original member was Edgar Froese, who remained in the band until his death in January 2015. Back in the early days, drummer and composer Klaus Schulze was a member of Tangerine Dream, however the most solid was the line-up from the mid-1970s, keyboard trio: Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke and Peter Baumann. At the beginning of the 1980s, Baumann was replaced by Johannes Schmoelling. This line-up existed for a long time and was extremely productive.
Edgar started a new period with a concert series in Australia in November 2014 by forming a new line-up with Ulrich Schnauss, Thorsten Quaeschning, Hoshiko Yamane and himself. At the same time, all acoustic instruments were once again banned as in the 70’s to allow the group to concentrate on purely electronic sounds. Of course it was no coincidence that Edgar welcomed the London-based Ulrich Schnauss as a new band member alongside his longtime and highly esteemed band colleague and composer Thorsten Quaeschning, as both Ulrich and Edgar had always followed their careers with great interest and enjoyed an equally long friendship. Hoshiko Yamane, a member of TD since 2011, adds that special sparkle to the music by playing her very own virtuoso form of electric violin.
In wise foresight Edgar Froese’s wife, Bianca Froese-Acquaye, gave her blessing for the band project to continue, in order to realize his last musical vision of the so-called QUANTUM YEARS. It had been a fascinating and final challenge for Edgar to translate the latest scientific knowledge of quantum physics and philosophy into musical sounds. The results of this new formation speak for themselves: QUANTUM KEY – the first EP release of the new period after Edgar Froese’s death – has already delighted lovers of electronic music and the fans of Tangerine Dream.
The full album release of QUANTUM GATE in 2016 is currently being worked on intensively. Both albums are based on the parts of Edgar’s compositions that he had already begun, and to which the band now refines into a new creative and experimental-orientated direction of modern electronic symphonic sound.
SoundLab – the Philharmonic Laboratory of Electronic Music, is a musical and architectural undertaking by the Philharmonic in Szczecin. From October to June, the Philharmonic's interiors are an arena for unique events – SoundLab. The idea for the series was based on the suggestive synergy of form and function, tradition and modernity, music and architecture: the white shape of the Philharmonic building functions as an arena for the mutual percolation of sound and shape.
The tickets for “Tangerine Dream – a concert in memory of Edgar Froese” will be available for purchase at the Ticket Office at the Philharmonic and online from Wednesday, 11th May from 13.00.
