We invite you to the concert crowning the jubilee artistic season of the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin. A world-class star is a must during such a concert, so you will hear one of the greatest saxophonists of all time. Branford Marsalis, winner of three Grammy awards, will perform with our Orchestra.
The famous Escapades for alto saxophone and orchestra by John Williams – a piece from the film Catch Me If You Can, directed by Steven Spielberg with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. The piece, designed as a multi-part concerto, quickly became free from the bounds of the big screen and became an independent concert piece.
Branford Marsalis began his musical education as a clarinetist, but quickly replaced it with the saxophone. Today, he is an excellent saxophone virtuoso, active as both a jazz and classical musician. He regularly performs with the best orchestras in the United States, such as the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Chicago Philharmonic and the North Carolina Symphony, and others around the world. He often plays music by such classical composers as: Debussy, Glazunov, Ibert, Mahler, Milhaud and Vaughan Williams.
During the concert, we will also hear two pieces by Aaron Copland – considered the precursor and father of contemporary American classical music – Fanfare for a common man and Quiet City. The first was hailed by Leonard Bernstein as the best hit in the world, while the second, along with Adagio for Strings by Barber and The Unanswered Question by Ives, is considered one of the most meditative works in the history of American music.
Our concert will end with the Symphonia domestica op. 53 by Richard Strauss – a work that is a regulary continued in the repertoire of orchestras around the world and is loved by listeners.
But this concert will be particularly important for another reason as well. Maestro Rune Bergmann, will stand in front of the Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra for the last time as its artistic director and chief conductor. He has held these positions for the last eight years (since 2016).
We invite you to the golden symphony hall for the Season closing concert | BRANFORD MARSALIS on Friday, June 14th at 7:00 p.m. Tickets priced at PLN 220-250 are available now at the Philharmonic box office and online.
