The Tournament of Real Musicians organized in the Szczecin Philharmonic is different from most folk competitions. Its name is already intriguing and provocative. Dorota Serwa, director of the Philharmonic, is associated with the search for authentic sounds, not only those closest to the rural original, but also inspired by folk music: "We seek emotional truth and fidelity in tradition.
„Those who express the joy of music, but also continue the tradition of the ancestors of the region will play with us"
"Real musicians" cultivate the traditional music. However, it is not easy to pinpoint what it is, because, as Weronika Grozdew-Kołacińska writes, the traditional musical culture of the former Polish was a phenomenon of many currents: in addition to folk, there was also a noble music culture, urban culture, religious folklore, popular and national songs forming "home songbooks".
The researcher points out that traditional music is not only live music, but also alive music, "contemporary (today's) music from the past – present here and now", that it is "an expression of culturally shaped worldview", it is also a manifestation of "choice and lifestyle" and even "the art of life". Today it is performed by both, individual musicians and executive groups, as well as musicians from the city who feel the heirs of old music.
This year's Tournament, in addition to the performances of qualified performers, will commemorate in a special way the difficult, complicated fate of Polish families living in the former Eastern Borderlands.
