By inviting you to the "New Year's Concert 2021" at the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin, we want to spend a wonderful afternoon together. The meeting's mood will affect the whole year ahead. The Szczecin Philharmonic Big Band and their special guests will perform the greatest hits of world jazz.
At such a fantastic time, we cannot leave you without a dose of historical knowledge. The first New Year's celebrations were recorded 4,000 years ago. In ancient Babylon, mass religious ceremonies were held on the Spring Equinox. In Egypt, the beginning of the new year was heralded by the first floods of the Nile, and the Chinese New Year is the second new moon after the winter solstice.
None other than the excellent calendar reformer Julius Caesar decided that the calendar year would start in January. The Latin name of the month Ianuarius, borrowed by European languages, comes from the deity Janus. He was the god of all beginnings. Our Polish January (styczeń), initially called sieczeń, turned into January / tyczeń by association with the word pole in Polish tyka.
If you are looking for unusual ways to spend the New Year, we recommend trying some traditions from different countries. On this day, Filipinos try to use only round things (which look like coins) to ensure their prosperity for the next year. In Mexico, Bolivia and Brazil, the way to prosper is to wear colourful underwear – red for love and yellow for wealth. On the other hand, in Japan, according to Buddhist tradition, the bell is struck ... 108 times.
So... as the New Year, so the whole year! We believe that excellent music will ensure good fortune!
